Joe Root’s new stint as England captain has started to look very good and the two victories have been impressive. But he’ll be the first to admit that his team and his captaincy was never put to the test at Headingley and here at Lord’s. Pakistan were abject in both games and it’s the batting which has let their team down.
With Babar Azam’s return, they had some hopes but the skipper was done with them when his aggregate in the match was 6 and 8 – 14 in total, a very poor score against the ball in both innings. It’s true that it was difficult, but they didn’t take any chances.
Imam-ul-Haq was ruled out with a calf tear but they were clearly second best in all departments of the game. They’ve been battered and bruised, can they avoid a series whitewash in Birmingham? I believe the guys have taken it really well what’s thrown at them. They have developed a great rhythm on various surfaces, and have produced some really good scores in the conditions that we have encountered.
Then the bowling group, I mean, three guys that can bowl 90 mile an hour and Ollie Robinson, who looks horrendous in these conditions. So they go off nicely with the other one. These are constantly growing.
The more games that we get together, the more times that we spend out there on the field, the more we’ll learn about each other and how that looks, how that works, for me as captain, for them as players. There’s really a lot of nice stuff to take to West Indies, too.
I’m sure no matter what the conditions were I think the guys’ mentality and how they came back and got us to that score at the end of the innings was fantastic. Some brilliant partnerships there and Dan (Lawrence) in particular and Emilio (Gay) yesterday, I thought two very different ways of going about it, but very significant runs for us and put us in a really strong position.
The amount of runs there was always going to be tricky on that surface for them to chase down and with the bowlers bowling the way they are and the conditions being as they are, that was enough for us. It was such a fantastic finish as those guys came in and Cox were supporting a fantastic start at Headingley. There’s a lot of great stuff to build off and it looks like a great way to kick off this series.
Whatever the condition is, I think more of the same and again, finding the right method which is going to suit it, whether it be bat or ball, what is required of us, being skilful enough to execute it. I think it’s a momentous occasion for Abbas, as a team, to take five wickets, particularly at Lord’s, as wonderful did. Just because it’s a bit flatter on the slope, it’s still got something there, I think, you’ve got a little bit in the slope, and the pitch is quite helpful, I think, for the spinner. I think the consistency is what made him a Player of the Match and that’s what’s important about his form. No result was in doubt at the start of play today but Pakistan had to do something for themselves. The batting has been shambolic right through the tour and unfortunately for them, it didn’t get any better today. They were soon down to 14-3, after setting an unlike 389 for a series-levelling win.
Saud Shakeel had a tough time and some of his technical shortcomings were revealed in this series, but in the end he was determined to make an impact. He was super-dominant in his 97-run 4th wicket partnership with Shan Masood, and began to play with the tail with reckless abandon.
