The impasse of the trophy continues as our esteemed writer Vijay Tagore posted on X, while Mohsin Naqvi firmly insisted on presenting the trophy and India was not about to accept it from him. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, Indian side is victorious but not with the trophy – just as in the Men’s Asia Cup in 2025.

Not sure what’s happening, but the Indian team are yet to receive their medals and trophy. Or not at least, we have not seen any live footage of that. Farveez Maharoof, India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, the presenter, wraps up the presentation ceremony. We’re not entirely sure what happened there but we know we will get more updates on the situation.

It is worth to note that this is the case in the backdrop of the Asia Cup presentation of the medals and the trophy for the men’s team in last year, India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, which the Indian team did not receive from Naqvi. Instead, they posed for the cameras without them, even emulating a trophy lift.

Naqvi was also present on the podium tonight, making the developments around this presentation all the more intriguing. We weren’t shown any visuals, as the live telecast was cut off straight after Athapaththu spoke to Maharoof. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, I suppose we’ll have to wait for more updates, which you will get right here on Crickickbuzz.

Chamari Athapaththu | SL captain: It’s a part of the game. The winner wins and the loser loses, but in the end I know that our cricket wasn’t our best. Especially in the powerplay, we struggled a lot with the bowling. Their performance was very good. But we will bounce back as we come up with Asian Games after it. There’s lots of things we have to improve on, and we will come out of it. Outside of this game, our cricket was fairly good in this tournament, before Asian Games.

We played a few games that we beat, and today we were a little weak, but it doesn’t mean that we are not good. We must implement our plans and I hope we can recover. There were a lot of people that really made a huge leap in this tournament and played good cricket. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, Especially Harshitha, Praboda and Nilakshika. So we will carry all these positives into the next series.

The officials take turns in collecting their souvenirs. Chamari Athapaththu comes forward to accept her runners-up medal followed by her Sri Lankan teammates and coaches who follow in succession to take their medals. Mohsin Naqvi, President Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will award the runners up cheque to Athapaththu. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women.

Right after the players have won their title, the Indian side are in a huddle led by their head coach Amol Muzumdar. Now, India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajiv Shukla are presenting the fielding medal to Nandani Sharma. Saikia has also taken some time to speak to the players and give them congratulations on their victory.

Well, that’s enough for now then. India and Sri Lanka will now be travelling to Japan for the Asian Games, which opens on 17th September. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026. No more from us for now. It is good night, good bye and take care from: Hardik Worah, on behalf of Siva and Kiran Nataraj.

The trophy debate has been on going since our respected writer Vijay Tagore posted on X and Mohsin Naqvi said that he has to hand it over to the trophy and India says no. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, India take home victory, but no trophies, as they did last month at the Men’s Asia Cup.

The Indian side still hasn’t informed what is going on and they are yet to receive their medals and the trophy. Well, at least we haven’t seen any live footage of that, anyway. Farveez Maharoof, the presenter, wraps up the presentation. We’re not certain what happened there, India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, but we will have more updates about the situation.

This is in the backdrop of last year’s presentation for the men’s Asia Cup in which the Indian team failed to pick up the medals or the trophy from Naqvi. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women.

It was also noteworthy that Naqvi was also on the podium tonight making the developments around this presentation all the more intriguing. Captain Chamari Athapaththu | SL: It’s part of the game. One team wins, one team loses, but at the end of the day I know that we didn’t play our best cricket. Especially in the powerplay, we struggled a lot with the bowling. Their performance was very good. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women, But we won’t get disheartened as we have the Asian Games on the horizon after this. But there’s a lot of room in which to grow and we will grow back. How do you rate this performance in the lead up to the Asian Games?

Chamari Athapaththu steps forward first to take her runners-up medal while her Sri Lankan teammates and coaching team follow suit starting from one to one. Mohsin Naqvi, the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), is now presenting the runners up cheque to Athapaththu. India Women vs Sri Lanka Women.

The Indian squad is in a huddle, with head coach Amol Muzumdar talking to the players after winning the title. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajiv Shukla are now offering him the fielding medal. Saikia has also had a few words with the players, and has congratulated them on their triumph.

Gunalan Kamalini: [How does it feel to be included today?] It’s something different. It was too much for me to eat. It’s a different feeling. I can’t put it into words. I’m an 18 year old kid, there’s a lot of seniors here. So, I could gain a lot from them. So I think what I’ve learned from the seniors is their mindset. Whether they get out for zero or score 100, they have the same mindset, the same laughs and the same smile.

Nandani Sharma: It’s really great to feel. I was playing a tournament in India, and I got injured. This is my first World Cup, I’m in the WPL. It feels really really good and then we won again, so it feels even better. I believe it was my teammates and the staff who kept Chamari Athapaththu quiet.

They had all of it spelled out so clearly for us what we needed to do, I just did that. We have built a lot of confidence in this title, and it’s in our practice as well. Whatever little mistakes we made, we will work on them and then go there and win as well. She’s a batsman who when you need her, when you need the wicket, she gets it. Well we knew she’d take care of us.

We just had to give a good start with the ball.
Richa Ghosh: [Talking about the ambiance] It’s really nice here, with the fans applauding and cheering for us. I believe it tastes even better after the outcome.

[On posting 183 batting first] In the beginning, the wicket was good and the ball was coming nicely, and gradually the wicket was getting slower. I feel all our hitters were pretty good and we had a good size ballpark in front of us, knowing we could hold them to a minimum.

[How important is your contribution for the team?] It is very important for the team. There were some positions that I went into and the role that I was given, I believe that a team scores a lot when I get there. Well, we will talk to everybody and discuss what we can do. It’s just a game that’s completed; I haven’t thought about it yet.

Harmanpreet 2/2: [What would you like to say to the crowd?] I think I’ve been telling that they are our biggest support. They are always there to support us wherever we go, I think in front of them we always want to play good cricket and hope we are able to entertain them with our great performance.

And I’m sure today, it’s good to see a lot of smiles, a lot of, you know, people enjoying their performance, and hopefully we’ll keep continuing that. Yes, definitely, it’s going to be starting very soon. We set a pretty high bar for us, we had to meet it, you know, everyday and I’m pretty happy with us all coming up together.

Sri Harmanpreet Kaur | India captain 1/2: We are feeling this way because we know how much potential we have and we have an amazing team. I believe we played to our standards because that’s what we talked about when we got here, we have some standards and we have to meet them every day. We all played really well and we’re really pleased with that.

I believe the girls have played really well right throughout the tournament, and that they finished their 184 in a final well! That’s a big thing. Very important, of course. I think our openers did a fantastic job for us both Smriti and Shafali, when you come to think of it, it’s not that easy to come back.

I believe that Shafali had a very wonderful tournament and it’s good for someone like Shafali to take ownership and do the job, bat and ball. And I mean, I can’t ask for anything more from them. It’s purely about playing the game of cricket and I’m very happy in the end.
Muzumdar 2/2:

On Shafali Verma: Absolutely fantastic. The left-hand-right-hand combination (with Smriti)… Shafali has got her own style and the firepower that she has, and just the charisma that she has on the pitch just puts the opposition on the back foot. As always Smriti, she has that touch, she has that flair.

So they complement each other really well, and I’m glad that they had a good show time today. We were going to play Sri Lanka in India again in five matches and how we got rid of Chamari, very important wicket to Sri Lanka. So I thought that was the plan, but I’m glad that Deepti went on to execute it nicely.
Honorable mention to Amol Muzumdar | India coach 1/2:

Smriti Mandhana is out the ball on her maiden strike for FOUR in the first ball of Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final, off Mithali Ayodhya. Some width is given as the ball maintains its position, all Mandhana has to do is push it away from the point region for four runs
Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma are in the crease. Smriti Mandhana is on a strike. Mithali Ayodhya will lead the way in the attack.

The players are in the middle and Sri Lanka’s national anthem first and then India’s. And now we are all set for the live action. The Sri Lankan team is out in the middle, with Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma striding out as well. Mithali Ayodhya has the new ball in hand.. Let’s go!

Deepti Sharma: [In the final, does one’s approach change at all?] No, I don’t think that it changes anything because pitch, condition, mindset will be the same, and I always think of how I can play in different phases. Obviously I can’t give it here, but we have plans for the end of time in Sri Lanka. I believe all 40 overs determine the game today because of the time when the ball comes good (to them) in the powerplay of the game.

But we always have to ready, how the ball is coming in. We know, as we have played here a lot. We are aware of the behavior of the ball, the approach of the ball. I always think at an all-rounder level – the one I do better for the team and how I can assist the younger players – that one, I think is the one I think about the most.

This is an odd one, alright? India have opted to change their XI for the final, after a consistent performance with the same XI in their first four matches. Pratika Rawal has been “rested” and not dropped, while Gunalan Kamalini, who has appeared in just one T20I to date, has joined the team.

Teams:

Sri Lanka Women (Playing XI): Chamari Athapaththu(c), Imesha Dulani, Vishmi Gunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika Silva, Kaushani Nuthyangana(w), Sugandika Kumari, Chamudi Praboda, Mithali Ayodhya

India Women (Batting XI):

Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Gunalan Kamalini, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Bharti Fulmali, Richa Ghosh(w), Deepti Sharma, Prema Rawat, Shree Charani, Kranti Gaud, Nandani Sharma
Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka Women Captain): If they let us choose we would certainly bowl first as we have our skills. Last few games we have bowled really good.

Well, for me, and the team, it would be a pretty good thing. There is a need to enhance cricket in the country on a continuous basis. So this means that we have good players. We will stick with our plans and we’ll try to play positive cricket in the middle. We will be making one change, that is, replacing Sanjana Kavindi with Vishmi Gunaratne. I felt we needed some experience. The first six overs will be very crucial and what sum would you hope to keep India to tonight? So if we are able to get early (wickets), then I think (there will be) pressure on them.

India Women Captain Harmanpreet Kaur: [It is the first time we win the toss here today. What’s your decision and why]? Today it’s our turn to bat first. The reason for it? We think it’s an important game for us and it’s always good to have a score on the board. That is why, as a group we chose to bat first. Everyone can relate to the 2024 final, Harman. I think every ending is important, but at the same time there’s a lot of pressure tonight to write a different ending. I believe today’s game is about being in the moment, being a good cricketer, and giving it your best.

Yes we have one change in our XI. Pratika is out on a day off today, Kamalini returns. I believe she has a lot of potential and hopefully she’ll have a lot of fun today. I suppose we don’t have a set target, but… It’s all about using the batting powerplay and then see how much we can get.

India Women have taken the advantage and have decided to bat first.
In the live visuals, Smriti Mandhana, Gunalan Kamalini and some more players are doing some football exercises, while Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma do some arm and shoulder exercises using resistance bands. Both will be expected to be involved in key roles both at bat and with the ball and legspinner Prema Rawat will be getting some practice on the practice pitch.

However, there are two entirely different stories in the batting.
The Indians have been dependent on their openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana who have delivered 322 runs on a strike rate of nearly 170, while the next five bowlers have scored 191 runs and averaged 96.5 strokes per delivery. Sri Lanka will know if they can clear both the openers early, how much it will give them a real chance of beating India.

Sri Lanka face similar woes in their batting department, meanwhile. Chamari Athapaththu has had 9, 1 and 5 off an unbeaten 48 against the UAE. It’s not been easy for Imesha Dulani and Sanjana Kavindi either but Sri Lanka have found a solution in their middle order batsmen with Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika Silva and Kaushani Nuthyangana who have consistently come in handy when it matters the most.

Tonight, if Athapaththu is in form, Sri Lanka will be a far greater threat to India. Well, we’ve been boring you long enough – it’s not too far off now that the toss.
Both sides have well-balanced bowling attack for this type of conditions.

The young pacers have been active enough to get the new ball talking, and at the death, and the spinners have been influential as expected. Chamari Athapaththu and Deepti Sharma are the joint-highest wicket takers while Shree Charani, Prema Rawat, Sugandika Kumari, Chamudi Praboda and Kavisha Dilhari are also involved in the wickets.

India’s route to the final: The Women in Blue came into the competition as favourites and have lived up to the expectations so far. India posted huge scores and comfortably dispatched Thailand and Hong Kong, China with totals of 65 and 56 respectively. Next came Pakistan, where the fans had pinned their hopes on a better contest, but they were bowled out for 57.

In the semi-final against Bangladesh, Shafali Verma’s 64 off 40 catapulted India up to 149, before another time the bowlers came into play and put the Bangladesh bowlers under the laser. However, for Sri Lanka, it should prove a much tougher challenge. They have more batters down the order who are in-form, and their batting runs deeper.

Sri Lanka’s unbeaten journey to the final: Chamari Athapaththu and co. have had their share of bumps and bruises. They then had a walloping 79-run victory over the UAE but were then held to 62/6 before Nilakshika Silva struck a fifty to get them to 124/7. Then came the rarest of Athapaththu’s 7/5 as Indonesia were all out for 49.

Against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka had lost 44/5 before the lower middle order pulled them out of the woodwork with 115 to chase. The semi-final proved no exception: They were beaten by their top four early in the match as they sought 131 from Pakistan. In the penultimate over, they will have to be replaced by 5-8 to take them over the line.

India had the better of Sri Lanka in the final of 2022, but in 2024, the island country came up with the solution to secure their first Asia Cup victory in 2 years. Once again the two sides are the best in the tournament and are unbeaten in the final. But all that doesn’t matter now tonight.

So what went on before is inconsequential when they’re in the middle. Sri Lanka have secured only one victory in their previous 10 T20Is against India, which was in the 2024 Asia Cup final. At least this will inspire them to believe they’ll be able to do it again! So, get ready for what will be a fascinating match-up.

17:15 Local Time, 13:15 GMT, 18:45 IST: Hello and welcome, everyone! India and Sri Lanka are in the Asia Cup final for the third time in a row after defeating both the other teams in 2022, 2024 and now 2026. The two dominant teams in Asia women’s cricket in recent years, it might be just as well that they meet again in a match for the title.

Players are out in the center and we have the national anthem of Sri Lanka first followed by the national anthem of India. So now we’re all ready for the live action. The Sri Lankan team is out in the middle, with Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma striding out as well. Mithali Ayodhya has the new ball in hand.. Let’s go!

Deepti Sharma: [Is there any change in the approach at all after you got into the final?] No, I don’t think there is any change in the approach because the mind, the pitch, the condition is the same and I always think about how I can contribute in various phases. Sure, we have some ideas for the final, but obviously, I can’t tell you what they are. I believe all 40 overs determines the outcome today because in powerplay, the ball is sometimes good (to the bat).

But we always have to be prepared, for how the ball is coming in. We know, as we’ve played a lot here. We know how our ball is moving, how our ball will come to the bat. As a whole person, I always look at something on a different level: How am I doing more for the team and how am I helping the younger players.

This one is a surprise – this is the first one. After fielding an unchanged XI in their first four games, India have decided to make a change for the final. Pratika Rawal was not dropped, he was “rested” and Gunalan Kamalini, who has only made one T20I appearance, found his place.
