Shai Hope: Well, it (toss) doesn’t really matter now, does it? We would have batted today, otherwise. We’ve had a fast turnaround with the prep. We do a lot of cricket which is not CPL cricket, but it’s been very good. I believe the guys have been playing good cricket in the past couple of years, more or less about this time period for another team to come to India and attempt to do the same.
Yes, of course, and I just always say this with me and a strong team from India, we want to play the best teams in the world and here’s the best place to do it in India anyway. So I believe the guys are pretty excited for this challenge. Well, a substantial score on the board will certainly do.
We’ve got to make sure we put a big score on the board. It’s very good conditions here in India to bat, usually tends to get a little bit better actually in the evening time. So a good start with the bat and hopefully we can finish it off with the ball. This is probably the best that we have here in Trivandrum, which is even close to the Caribbean.
I believe that the men are going to be pleased with the beginning we had here. I’m just wishing this series well and I hope to get a good start. There are 5 bowlers — 1 all-rounder, 3 seam and 2 spin. So hopefully the combination is right for us these days.
Shubman Gill: First we’re going to bowl. Examines a fairly good surface. It seems to be a good surface and it’s real hot so I believe it will be a little bit better under the lights, so we’ll try to chase. [On not having everyone available because of the Asian Games] I mean, I think we’ve got a pretty decent combination here, going with four bowlers and two all-rounders.
I believe 20-odd games before the World Cup kicks in, it is the time to see what is a combination that works best for us and then give that combination as much time in the middle as possible. Preparation’s been good for the home season. It’s been a bit of an up and down week with some rain and some no rain, but I believe the preparation has been all right. On the playing XI, we are taking four bowlers, and then 2 all-rounders, Reddy and Naman – who is making his debut.

Pitch Report | Abhinav Mukund and Daren Ganga: It’s a pretty warm day here in Thiruvananthapuram to start off this ODI series. The temperature is in the early 30s. Let’s have a look at the dimensions. Pretty even on both sides, with 65 meters on each side: longest side is 74 meters. That is to say that the energy will remain on the ball and not be absorbed from the surface. It will slip on good for batting; and the strength of the batting should be a little stronger than the strength of the bowling.
One of the things that bowlers are going to consider now will be the change in the law. Those two new balls from either end are now coming together in the 34th over and the swing of the last 10 overs is reduced from 0.6-0.65 to just about 0.8-0.83 which is a slight advantage for bowlers to take in this first ODI. And it will also help that the ball will be dry. The curator assures that there is no dew for the past couple days, and that the anti-dew agent has been used.
