Bantam once again beats the maiden ODI hundred as England routed Sri Lanka to clinch series victory.
A stellar all-round effort from England put them 2-1 ahead in the ODI series with Sri Lanka, with them taking an emphatic 223-run victory at The Oval. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Tom Banton made his ODI debut and added 70s making England total 355 for 7 for the record when they chose to bat first.
In reply, Sri Lanka could only muster 132, with Kusal Mendis’s 35 being the highest score, as Liam Dawson and Gus Atkinson shared five wickets to expedite England’s comprehensive win, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, which gave them their fifth consecutive bilateral ODI series win over Sri Lanka.
After Dilshan Madushanka bowled him for a five-ball duck on the second over, Ben Duckett fell for a five-ball duck. Joe Root came back into the game with Banton and the two averaged to calm the innings as they reached 50 for 1 after 10 overs. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Banton had most of the momentum, and he was the one to make a pair of runs on each side.
Root, however, had a stroke of luck in the ninth over and Pathum Nissanka bowled a thick outside edge at slip, but he was unable to gain impetus after 12 consecutive 12s at his end. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Banton was getting his numbers to come off the bat at the other end, and in the 14th over, he got his first six from a well-aimed upper-cut from Madushanka.
The second wicket pair was able to build a 62-run stand before Root was caught leg-before by Janith Liyanage for Sri Lanka, making the use of the review successful. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Banton started with his second consecutive fifty-plus score and Brook, like Root, found himself unable to make a fluid attack on the ball and was lucky to get a chance in the 21st over when he edged the ball past Dunith Wellalage, but keeper’ Kusal Mendis failed to recover the opportunity.
They were also indifferent about reviewing an LBW appeal against Brook later in the innings, with UltraEdge saying there was some glove. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, They also lost an opportunity when Sachindu Colombage appeared to have Banton out but cleverly a faint outside edge found its way to the batter.
Brook, who was on 17 off 32, finally got going when he hit two fours and a six off Liyanage in the 26th over and scored a boundary off Eshan Malinga England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, before hitting a max off Colombage to make it 49 balls for 50. Banton moved into the 90s off Malinga’s sixes and the third wicket pair was instrumental in putting up a century.
The opener then found himself at 100 on 100 while adding a 95-run four to their tally on the previous over before Wellalage was given a 2-run four by Brook in the 33rd, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, also marking the first time he has added doubles to his account during the match.
The opener then reached 100 on 95 in the next over on a 4 off Wellalage, with the bowler getting a second double, this time 2 off Brook, from the same over. Madushanka also took a few runs, conceding 22 in the 34th over after Banton hit him for two sixes – the first of which was the maximum.
Before they separated, Banton and Brook added 150, but the England captain was given the axe by Asitha Fernando in the 35th over. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Banton was caught at long on after scoring two consecutive four runs off Colombage, and was out three overs later.
After 40 overs, England were 251 for 4 and the lively Jordan Cox’s fifty and Will Jacks and Jamie Overton’s quick-fire 20s brought them into the race in the final 10 overs. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, After Wellalage struck out Jacks with two fours and a six, Colombage was forced to leave the park.
Cox then had a fifty on fifty, followed by more runs off the boundaries as Fernando knocked off the final two of the innings. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, It was a good finish, though, for England as they got 104 in the last 10 overs, with 57 coming in the last five.
Sri Lanka were dealt a blow in the chase as Nissanka was caught for 1, pushing Sonny Baker out of the way to give him his first ODI scalp. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Kamindu Mendis added some two-run boundaries and Kusal had two sixes off Gus Atkinson.
The partnership did not last long though as Atkinson got the wicket of Kamindu. Kusal, who hit a six and a four off Baker, followed by a boundary off Atkinson, ended up top-edging one to midwicket to depart for 35 off 26 as Atkinson picked up his second wicket. After the team hit a wicket in the 10th over, Jofra Archer replaced the bowlers and he was dismissed for two fours by Pavan Rathnayake when Sri Lanka fell to 63 for 3.
Rathnayake and Charith Asalanka formed a vigilant tandem but it was difficult for Charith to come out of strike. Cox preyed on Rathnayake and before Archer was topping the stump over, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, the third umpire had some confusion from the pressure of the pressure, but finally sided with the bowlers.
The next over, Asalanka hit a miss and missed a Root pull, which resulted in a 19-ball 7. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Sri Lanka’s problems were not solved immediately as Wellalage was caught behind Liam Dawson’s attempted slog sweep to bring their total down to 82 for 6 in the 17th over.
Liyanage was then looking to respond with a four and a six off Root but Sri Lanka lost wickets too as Colombage was out stumped in Dawson’s over. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Liyanage top edged a pull off Overton to leave for 19 to make it 106 for 8.
Dawson bade Fernando to come back for 6 to take his third wicket of the innings. Malinga had a couple of boundaries off Dawson, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, before falling to Jacks who caught a stunning leg-slip off Root to end Sri Lanka’s innings in the 30th over to complete a facile win.
Brief scores: England 355/7 in 50 overs (Tom Banton 126, Harry Brook 77, Jordan Cox 76; Asitha Fernando 3-64) beat Sri Lanka 134 in 29.1 overs (Kusal Mendis 35; Liam Dawson 3-26, Gus Atkinson 2-26) by 223 runs. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI.

With his children following him, Mark Wood rings the bell. Some overcast conditions with a chance of rain but looks good in the meantime. The players and umpires take a step out onto the middle. Asitha Fernando to start off with the new ball. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Two slips in place. Here we go…
England have made three changes to their playing XI from the last game – Cox has replaced Buttler while Liam Dawson and Sonny Baker have replaced Rehan Ahmed and Josh Tongue respectively. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are unchanged.
Teams:
England (Batting XI): Joe Root, Harry Brook(c), Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Ben Duckett, Sonny Baker, Paul Ebbett, Matt Anderson, Kable Matthews England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI
Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Pavan Rathnayake, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage, Sachindu Colombage, Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka
England put in first innings, and they are the winners of the toss.
Buttler’s hamstring injury came as a blow. He came back to the field on his feet but collapsed in the last over and it was the end of Sri Lanka’s run. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Well done to the visitors’ determination to get up and set an example for us all of what they can do.
As far as a forced change for England is concerned, Dan Lawrence has been brought up a place ahead of Buttler for the last match. After 2014, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, the visitors have a golden opportunity to finish the tour in style and sign the biggest of the historic wins on English soil.
England are still the favourites though considering their white-ball dominance of late at home. The Kennington Oval surfaces are typically good for strokeplay, England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, and we should have a good scoring game. This should be a cracker! Soon Toss and team lineups will be released…
09:30 (local time) / 08:30 (GMT) / 14:00 (IST): Hello and warm welcome to the third and final ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Kennington Oval, London. Everything is on the line for this series decider as Sri Lanka made a phenomenal comeback in the final match.
England won the first match by an emphatic margin in good measure thanks to Will Jacks’ outstanding all-round display and Root and Brook’s important efforts at the plate. Things were looking gloomy for Sri Lanka after having a horrid tour till then.
However Kusal Mendis stole the show scoring a terrific century to lead his side to a 321-run stand. Their bowlers came under pressure, but managed to do a fine job. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, Wellalage turned things around when he scored three times while their seamers had some good reverse swing in the second half and continued to chip away at the wickets.

Joe Root | Men’s Player of the Summer (1/1): (On the long summer) Yeah, looking forward to a couple of weeks before we head to Pakistan. So far, this one’s been a pretty successful one. I believe we’ve only lost two white-ball games this summer. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, So this group is really on fire, learning and improving all the time and progressing in the right direction towards the World Cup.
Well, in the opening part of the summer it was quite a stretch of time that I didn’t get to really play much of it. England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI, So the past week or so and trying to get back into the swing of it and play a little more often has been great. Great direction and development towards a World Cup and a place that I love.
In a year or so’s time, and in the group’s favor, and in my favor I think we’re going in a very good direction, if we’re in a carrot and an incentive to not just me, but the group. So long may that continue and that hunger stays there, and we can keep putting match-winning performances and series wins before that comes around.

It was a triumphant finish to the summer at home and a good birthday gift for white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, who is celebrating his 45th birthday today. The visitors were never in with the bat and 356 was always going to be a difficult catch. Pathum Nissanka was early, they both hit a fantastic delivery from Baker and Kamindu Mendis grabbed a big leading edge on the flick, Kusal Mendis then miscued a pull to mid-wicket.
It was done with the new ball and the middle order caved in somewhat gingerly. England had only one worry, rain, but they had to bowl at least 20 overs and again, there was nothing to draw attention to the batting of all the Sri Lankan batsmen as they were bundled out for a paltry 132 for a loss of 223 runs! Three wickets for the impressive Liam Dawson while Gus Atkinson took 2.
The hosts in white-ball cricket enjoyed a good summer, as they convincingly beat both India and Sri Lanka. They’ve built up some good momentum and will look to continue their build-up to the 2027 WC with more strong performances. Stay tuned for the presentations..
Tom Banton | Player of the Match: “When I was a kid I would aspire to be that guy that gets to score 100 points for his country in his own country, I guess that’s what I’d think of, that would be cool. There were lots of friends here, lots of family, it was really cool.
Joe Root | Men’s Player of the Summer: (Long summer) Shut up, I’m looking forward to the next couple of weeks before we go to Pakistan. So it’s been a good one though. I feel like we’ve only lost two white ball games this summer. This group is doing exceptionally well, learning and growing every day and progressing in the right direction with the World Cup coming up. Oh yeah, I think in the early part of the summer I didn’t play at all except for a few games.
So we’ve been going back into the swing of things and playing a bit more often which have been really great. I am very fond of the direction this team is going in and how we are preparing for it as a World Cup. That’s about to be a carrot and an incentive for not only me, but for the group, in a year or so’s time, I believe we are going in a really good direction.
As long as that continues and that hunger remains, and we can continue to put match winning performances and series wins before that. But it doesn’t really matter how you get there (England games without a significant contribution from him of late). It’s on the way, guys have been really great in this series and they demonstrated some depth in the team.
Obviously we’ve had a few injuries, guys that have been missing out on this and for some guys to come in and play as well as they have is brilliant. It demonstrates the depth that they have and obviously it will be needed in the quantity of cricket that we’re about to face in this format in the next couple of days.
