Match report: England beaten by Argentina in World Cup semi in Atlanta, as holders astonish Three Lions with late-time double in seven minutes – with Enzo Fernandez’ leveller to Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner leading the way;

England’s hosts secure the victory with a two-goal barrage in the final seven minutes – the first from Enzo Fernandez, the second from Lautaro Martinez; Argentina’s hosts pull off the late-time comeback to halt England, stunning the Three Lions with the pair of goals in quick succession.

England were denied a first World Cup final since 1966 as their season-ending defeat to Argentina in their 2-1 victory came from a brilliant late turnaround courtesy of Lautaro Martinez.

After Anthony Gordon opened the scoring early in the second half, the Three Lions were in front 1-0 with five minutes of normal time left to play in Atlanta.

But two goals in the space of seven minutes saw a remarkable comeback from Argentina as Enzo Fernandez levelled with a wonderful 85th-minute strike from distance before substitute Martinez headed in a 92nd-minute winner.

Argentina’s turnaround came after England boss Thomas Tuchel made a number of defensive substitutions as England looked to hold on to their lead.

But following the changes, Argentina took firm control of the game and deservedly came back, with Lionel Messi playing a huge influence as he assisted both goals, producing a fine cross for Martinez’s winner.

Spain’s next opponents will be Lionel Scaloni’s men on Sunday in New Jersey as England will play France in the third-place play-off on Saturday in Miami.

Having lost back-to-back European Championship finals, it was another case of so close, yet so far for England as Tuchel’s in-game changes saw England average just 12 per cent possession after Gordon’s opener until Martinez’s winner.

Tuchel told BBC Sport that he had “no regrets” for the changes in his tactics as he described his changes: “We went to a back five because we had too many gaps and too many were really wide, we did it to close the gaps inside and to be stronger in the air, we were so close, but we got too passive after we scored.

The German then officially announced at his post-match press conference that he will be staying on board to lead the Three Lions for the upcoming Euro 2028, which will be hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Meanwhile, England captain Harry Kane admitted Tuchel’s changes backfired as he told BBC Sport: “Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is just not enough, so I’m gutted.”

Merson: Tuchel was the same as Southgate

I don’t know how to even begin to describe myself. Gareth [Southgate] took a lot of stick for being defensive – and I thought he did well – and Tuchel has come in and done the same as Gareth.

I know what to do in the Mexico match [last-16 victory] when we’re down to 10, we’re going to have to keep them under the cosh, but here we had to do something different. We have to learn from it and look forward to Euros.

I get it that Gareth is a defensive coach, because he was a defender – naturally he’s going to be a defensive coach. But I didn’t consider that with Tuchel and I thought he would do something different to the Argentines and put them under pressure.

But it was just ‘we are going to defend here’ and when we did score we had a lorry load of defenders on there.

Tuchel has ‘missed the point’

It’s a feeling of being overruled that Tuchel got that wrong. The man who was the FA’s choice due to his impeccable tactical acumen down under, must put his hands up.

England scored and they were on top and Tuchel was straight on to retain.

The first half was dominated by Argentina after “Sitting deep” for over 30 minutes to go won the battle. They had numerous chances to score the equaliser before they did, and even more before the winner. Argentina would have been able to score again, twice in the final frenzied quarter of the game.

“England can have nothing but praise – the better side won – but there is a terrible sense that this was largely self inflicted.”

Was England in for a surprise as deep as it went, so early? But, looking back it is easy to say that Tuchel’s switch to a back five with 71 minutes after the break was a painful experience to watch, let alone play in.

They didn’t just hand over territory, they handed over nearly 93 per cent of the ball in the 21 minutes between both the switch and conceding the goal.

The Three Lions failed to score once in the opposition half after the goal but, when England reverted to form and sat back, Tuchel’s replacements further exacerbated the issues.

England had not got an out ball, in a 5-4-1. Seven times in the opposition’s half and just once in the final third, since the introduction of Ezri Konsa and the second Argentina target.

He added: “That classic English anxiousness, and Tuchel’s unhelpful gamble, invited the reigning World Cup holders and the greatest player of all time onto them. His two assists and Argentina’s two well-deserved goals were the perfect punishment.
