Argentina fightback stuns Egypt

Argentina bounced back from being two goals down to beat Egypt in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Enzo Fernandez had one of the most dramatic goals.

Argentina bounced back for the ages and managed to beat Egypt in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™. Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko were on the verge of one of the biggest surprises in the competition at Atlanta Stadium when Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez scored late to turn the tide. Now Argentina wait for the Switzerland-Colombia winners in the quarter finals.

Yasser Ibrahim was the first to lead Egypt into a shocking lead which was saved up magnificently by Mostafa Shoubir. Nicolas Tagliafico was skilfully awarded a penalty by the goalkeeper, who did a great job with his diving skills to save from Messi, and also made fantastic saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez from the south-west.

Thinking they had made two, Egypt just before the hour. Haissem Hassan swept down the right wing and fed Salah who got Ziko to beat round the rim. However, they were denied an opportunity to score by fouling out the goal in the build-up. It only delayed the Al Ahly man from doubling the lead but, he put the finishing touch on a quick counter attack with Salah and Hassan.

It had left Egypt on the verge of victory but Romero dished out a consolation kick, then Messi’s incredible back heel goal levelled the scores and Fernandez found the magic to survive the game.

Mostafa Shoubeir saved a spot-kick from IR Iran’s Mehdi Taremi in the group stage and is just the fourth goalkeeper to save two World Cup penalties. The 26-year-old was a copycat of Poles Jan Tomaszewski, American Brad Friedel and another Pole in Wojciech Szczesny.
Enzo Fernandez set a record by netting the 3,000th World Cup goal.
