Brazil vs Norway 1-2: FIFA World Cup 2026 last 16 – as it happened

Brazil have only lost one game to Norway, which has been their only game against them.

It was the fifth meeting between the two countries and on three of the four occasions Norway were the winners.

Two of those victories came on the World Cup final – one 2-1 in the group stage of the ’98 World Cup and again tonight.

In which Haaland was unlucky for 13.
Erling Haaland has now gone 14 matches without missing a competitive international goal for Norway tallying 26 goals in the process.

His last goal in a competitive game for his country came against Austria in the UEFA Nations League in October 2024.

So what’s the next step for Brazil?
Not a vintage team, Brazil – it’s fair to say.

Carlo Ancelotti is one of the finest managers ever but can do only so much.

The full-time whistle has brought Neymar to tears. It’s most likely the end of his World Cup chapter as he scored his 9th goal in the tournament. But the promise of greatness was not matched by the reality in the World Cup.

It is the first time in 27 years that Brazil are eliminate from a World Cup, after being eject from the round of 16 by Argentina in 1990. They had made it to the quarter-finals of their previous eight World Cups.

Gabriel and Marquinhos could have led impressive campaigns with their clubs but failed to find the right opportunities for their players to score twice, and they weren’t given enough time to recover from the running jump to head into the top of the area for the first goal, nor enough space to work with Haaland outside the box for the second.

Vinicius Junior was brilliant in bits and pieces over their five games and had a great assist for 19-year-old Endrick in his through-ball today who was flustered in 1v1 with the keeper and ended up prodding a post high and wide when the match was at 0-0.

It could have all been a different story if Guimaraes had taken the half-time penalty which was seen saved by Nyland, but which he stuttered at a good height for the keeper.

There’s plenty to do for Ancelotti in the next four years.

They all give them their two goals; their hero is dancing in the middle of the field, jumping up and down as they cheer for him.

Next up for Norway?
A Saturday night battle for supremacy with Mexico or England at 21:00 GMT, which, with the heat and humidity in Miami, could be even harsher.

The last-16 draw in Mexico City is set for just under two hours, but with extreme weather in the country it could be delayed.
